Solving Family Conflicts

Recently my friend told me about a situation she going through with her uncle and Her dad. Both have been sharing the same property they got from their dad before he passed away. My friend wrote and told me that her uncle burned the sugarcane field of her dad! All the family members are affected by that situation he created.

When I heard that, I meditated for a solution and came up with an idea of writing to the one who lost his field and sharing my thoughts with him, to help him handle that situation without creating more conflicts. Here are the thoughts I shared with him:

I know you lost your field of sugar cane and it has been part of your income, but don’t sue your brother for that mistake he made, because that is just continuing the conflict, and no good can come from conflict. What your brother did was wrong. He did it in anger, without thinking what is the result. That was a mistake. In time, he will calm down and will recognize the mistake he made to set fire in your field. He will see how your family and friends are affected by that mistake, which can help his soul to recognize that mistake.

Taking him to court or doing something physical will make him feel defensive, but solving the problem without anger and punishment will help him see things more clearly in time. Divide the land and then you can avoid future conflict. It is difficult to share property with a man who has such a bad temper. So this is the time for you to divide your property from him.

Invite the Local Council and present your agreement, which shows that you have authority to take your part because your father gave that property to both of you. The agreement is going to help you guys to divide your property, and everyone will have his boundary to avoid future conflicts.

Many people make mistakes because of anger! But after a while their mind calms down and they start recognizing the mistakes they made. So your brother will recognize that mistake himself, or maybe he is already starting feeling that in his heart, just he is afraid to ask you for forgiveness. I’m sure he feels in his heart that he made a mistake. Finally, when he can admit his mistake, it can help him to learn how to control his anger.

Please, try as much as possible to avoid giving him a hard time, even if it hurts you, and help your family members understand this, so they can do the same. Because if your family members give your brother a hard time, the conflicts will keep coming. This is the best way you can use to handle that situation, and it will help you to deal with other people too. Because the world is full of challenges.

I’m sure your sugar cane will grow up again and continue sustaining your family. And you can be sure there will be no conflict, because you will be having your own property.

The important thing is to bring harmony, because conflict only creates more conflict. When someone makes a mistake, we shouldn’t make the same mistake. I hope my thoughts about this will help other people too.

Life challenges

In life we all face a lot of challenges and each challenge helps us to move forward! By considering things in a big picture we will find a solution for our daily life challenges. Each challenge has a new message or lesson for us to move forward, and it’s part of life.

For example, a friend disappointed me by forgetting something that was important to me. It was a challenge for me, but I didn’t want to reinforce my negative feelings. So I started thinking about how much my friend cares for me and how close we are with each other. I ended up feeling their love instead of feeling disappointed. I became very happy, with very good feelings about my friend.

Then I got to know that our friendship is much more important than the individual events of life. When something disappointing happens, we decide it means something very sad about our relationship, and it’s not true. But it took me some hours to recognize that. It was a challenge, but I learnt something from it.

I’m not trying to say that disappointment is a good thing, but when it happens accept that you can learn something from it.

All the challenges I have been facing are helping me to lift up my consciousness from one step to another step. You know, challenges can be part of our growth, people don’t realize it, but it’s true.

Free Will

We can try to help people, but also they have to help themselves. It’s like going to the doctor. When you go to the doctor he may give you medicine, and tell you how to use it. He might say, “Take 2 tablets once in a day.”

But the doctor is not going to be at your home when you are taking those tablets. It’s your responsibility to take those tablets by following the doctor’s instructions he told you! You may even decide not to take those tablets. It’s your choice.

The patient has the responsibility of taking his or her tablets in time, according what the doctor said. Also the patient is free to throw away those tablets! Because it’s his or her choice.

When we help our friends, we are like the doctor. We can give our friends love and energy and good ideas. It is their choice to use our help or not. Our job is to love people everywhere we go, to the people we meet. Those people also have choice to love others or not.

Love is the only solution

Love is the only solution for all problems. This was my experience when I was facing a hard life, because I was born in a poor family, and I was not able to live with my parents. But my mom taught me how to love and the importance of love, and I had nothing else. So I used love to solve all my problems.

For example, when I moved into the city of Kampala in Uganda, I bought a piece of property and the city approved my land and put the landmarks around, showing where my property ends.

After a few days, my neighbor crossed over my landmarks and started using three meters of my land. Three meters in the city is very expensive, someone can start a business on that piece of land.

I told my neighbor that he crossed the landmark and took part of my land. He didn’t agree with what I was saying and he insisted that he knew where the landmarks stopped. I thought about what I should do. I decided having a good relationship with my neighbor is more valuable than three meters of land. So I forgave my neighbor in my heart and did my best to be a good friend to him.

After 6 months he came to my house early in the morning, and he said, “I need to talk to you Wilson.” Then we moved out and we sat outside. He apologized to me and said, “I made a mistake to cross the landmarks. I see how good you are, so I’d like you to take back your three meters which I had stolen from you.” Then we hugged each other and we were very happy to be very close neighbors.

I solved that problem by using love, instead of taking him to court. Love was a much better solution. Even if I will be taking him to court, I can make him refund my land; but he will not stop being mean to other people, and he will not be happy with me. So, more problems would come. But people won’t mean things when they love each other.

I encourage you to use love to solve your problems too.

Forgiveness

When someone does something wrong, it’s hard to want to forgive them. We feel justified in blaming them. It will help us to forgive them if we realize we are blaming them for something they didn’t do.

For example, if you are in traffic and someone behind is honking at you and wants you to go ahead which is impossible because someone is in front of you. The driver behind you is blaming you for making him or her late, but that is not your intention. You are waiting for the car in front of you. In our daily life we often feel hurt by people who are not trying to hurt us, so we are blaming them wrongly for hurting us. It was a mistake; we need to forgive them for making a mistake. Everyone make mistakes.

Still we have a lot of room for fixing that blaming habit for the benefit of others. If someone asks for forgiveness with a sincere heart and is ready to fix the mistake he or she made, we should accept his or her apology.

My experience about reacting

My experience about reacting

I used to react a lot to my friends, and I used to say hard words to them a lot. When I was 22 years old my closest friend called Jane used to be very reactive and I also had the same habit of reacting impulsively and used bad words to insult people.

One day I said a word to her but she didn’t like it, then she said something bad to me, and I said something hurtful in response. I said an insulting word, which I can’t even mention right now! Then Jane started crying and I walked away with much pride and I didn’t mind if she was sad or not, because I didn’t want to know and be affected. I was my own person and didn’t want to depend on anyone.

After one week I went on a bus ride and I looked to my side and found Jane sitting nearby in the same bus. I gave her a wave and smiled at her, then she started crying and people in the bus started taking care of her, but she didn’t tell them why she was crying. So I felt really bad because Jane was my close friend, and I regretted that I insulted her, and I was sad with the bad word that I used before.

When I came back from my trip I went to talk to Jane and her family and told them that I insulted her and apologized to them. I told them the word used and how this made her sad. Her mom started crying when she heard the word that I used. I asked them for forgiveness. It was hard for Jane to say anything, she was just crying.

It hurt me a lot that this happened and I started thinking about our friendship and if we would ever be close again. I knew that if I don’t fix it, we could not be close friends again.

I went back home, called my mom and I told her the whole story. My mom told me to fix that habit of reacting with pride and if someone insults you or is angry with you, just keep quiet and with time that person will realize that what they are doing is hurting you. Avoid responding to someone when you are mad, because you will be using that negative energy to hurt someone.

Again she told me that when someone makes you mad, take the time to relax in order to make sure that your heart is calm, then go and talk to that person. Then it will be easy to understand each other and solve the problem without insulting each other. And she said never respond to someone when you’re mad, and also she said I know it’s hard, but keep practicing it and it will help you and your friends to have better friendships.

She told me that if someone is being reactive with you, you will feel a strong force in your heart and body. But don’t react back to that person with that negative force. It will only create more conflict between you and them.

I went back to Jane’s family and told them about all the advice my mom gave me and also what I wanted to do to fix the pain I had caused to Jane and her family. She and her parents were so happy with this. Since then I stopped insulting anyone and Jane also told me that she stopped insulting other people. In the end we all learned from each other.

Hopefully this story can help you to fix the same bad habits of being hurtful to people even if they are being wrong to you or someone you love.

I would like to share with you all an experience I had with my neighbor. Sometimes if you be patient with a person, the goodness within them comes out…

I went back in my house and I was thinking about what I could do. I came up with the idea to assume that he is a good neighbor, and three meters are not more important than being good neighbors. I started thinking about the importance of being a good neighbor, because before I got this house me and him used to cooperate and share wheelbarrows, shovels etc. We had a very close friendship. That’s why I decided to not go into conflict with him and let him take the three meters.

I didn’t stop talking to him or sharing things as we used to, and our friendship continued and we didn’t have any conflict. And since then we continued with our new life and everything was going on well.

The reason why I wanted to share this story with all of you is that maybe one time it can happen to you that somebody does something wrong to you, so you will consider what you can do to keep friendship alive and trust in the goodness of that person, instead of just being angry and creating more conflict.
